HAIRY BIKERS STAR DAVE MYERS' RESENTMENT AFTER MAKING 'CRUEL' DECISION AS A YOUNG CARER

Dave Myers revealed the difficult choice he had to make for his family after he became a carer for his mum at the age of eight when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Following the diagnosis, the Hairy Bikers star was yet again faced with a predicament after his dad suffered a stroke and the doctor made him choose which parent to stay with.

Dave joined Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast to discuss his parents' illnesses and how he approached being a carer while he was just a kid.

The TV star admitted he was faced with a "cruel" decision at a young age.

He recounted: "When my dad had the stroke, I always remember that the doctor came around and said, 'Well, one of them can go to hospital. Which one of you do you think can look after?'

"And this was about a few months before my A-levels and I knew my mum wouldn't get better, my dad would.

"So, I said, 'It'll have to be my mum, really'.

"And that's quite hard for a kid. And I do resent that now, I still resent that.

"I think that was really clumsy and cruel. It could've been better, with a bit more kindness."

The TV chef was diagnosed with cancer last May and is still undergoing treatment.

But the debilitating therapy has left him with nerve damage and affected his mobility and balance.

Dave also revealed gruelling chemo left him unable to walk or ride his trademark motorcycle.

He said: "I was driving down to France. I'd had the scan that morning and had a phone call on the motorway in France at half past eight at night and they told me I'd got cancer."

But despite the shock, the treatment has been the toughest to deal with.

Dave added: "Chemotherapy doesn't half age you quickly, because your balance goes, so for someone with a motorbike that's a disaster and my walking's been affected quite a lot."

Elsewhere in the candid conversation, Dave said despite his treatment, he is looking forward to filming a new Hairy Bikers series in May with pal and co-host Si King, 56.

Dave added: "We're going to film around the chemo.

"I'm feeling ok and I'm going back to work, which is important to me because I have this relationship with Si going back 30 years. We're like brothers."

He's also about to take delivery of a new motorbike, though he needs physiotherapy to help him ride it.

Dave said: "They sit me on a Pilates ball and rock me from side to side, pretending I'm on the motorbike.

"I'm changing gear and braking and making motorbike noises."
