MERCEDES EQS: UPDATE BRINGS 500+ MILE RANGE AND STANDARD-FIT HYPERSCREEN
Mercedes has given its all-electric EQS saloon a mid-life facelift, which includes making its 55.5in Hyperscreen standard across the entire lineup. Other, considerably less important changes are a bigger battery for improved range and even more comfort loaded in for the rear passengers. But it’s not like those things matter or anything, as long as you’ve got a Massive Screen.
With the release of the EQS, Mercedes took a big leap forward from its then established design language, and this facelift looks to bring some familiarity back. So now there’s a darker radiator grille merging the curving headlight cluster together and additional chrome bits right across. You’re even treated to a standing star logo, which is a direct reference to the brand’s former models. It’s not quite a spitting image of the 300 SL, but it’ll do.
An extra 51 miles of range has now been squeezed out courtesy of aforementioned bigger battery (up from 108.4 to 118 kWh). Combined with the car’s low drag coefficient, this means the range-topping EQS 450+ can travel as much as 511 miles between coffee stops. A heat pump is also a new standard fit across every trim level, so the battery can be used to aid the climate control and allow the car to run more efficiently. Hyperscreen and heat pump, we’re being spoilt.
Let’s dissect the interior, and are we all in agreement that Merc makes some of the best in the game right now? The strong form continues in the new EQS, where the ventilation nozzles along the b-pillars have been refurbished in chrome, while the rear seats gain additional Nappa leather cushions. Your lower back should approve.
Those who choose the Extended Rear Luxury Pack get even more goodies, like a tilted footrest to place your feet at a more natural resting angle. You can also gain a little more space out back since the backrest can now be adjusted by up to 38 degrees. It’s like being on a sunbed in Majorca… except you’re likely just playing Uber passenger around the M25.
As an optional extra, you can further augment the rear seat experience with neck and shoulder heating, so at least you can somewhat fool your body into thinking you’re in Majorca.
