BMW’s Smallest M Car Is Growing Up

The BMW M2 has long occupied a unique place within BMW M's lineup.

While larger M models increasingly adopted sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems, the M2 remained a rear-wheel-drive holdout, preserving a more traditional driving experience.

That changes with the arrival of the new M2 xDrive.

BMW has officially introduced an all-wheel-drive version of the latest-generation M2, adding a significant new option for buyers while pushing the model into territory previously reserved for larger M3 and M4 variants.

The Formula Is Familiar

The technology has already proven itself in the M3 Competition xDrive and M4 Competition xDrive, where it delivers impressive traction without completely abandoning rear-wheel-drive characteristics. Applying that formula to the M2 appears straightforward on paper.

The car continues to use BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, but the addition of four driven wheels should allow more of its performance to be deployed more consistently, particularly in poor weather conditions and during hard launches.

The M2 Now Offers Two Different Interpretations

The introduction of xDrive may ultimately strengthen the M2 rather than dilute it.

Buyers who value traditional rear-wheel-drive dynamics can still choose the standard version. Those seeking maximum traction and year-round usability now have another option.

That flexibility mirrors what BMW has already achieved with the M3 and M4 ranges.

The real question is not whether the M2 xDrive will be quicker. It almost certainly will be. The more interesting question is whether BMW can preserve enough of the M2’s personality while adding the technology buyers increasingly expect.
